Dorothea Dix letters to George Barrell Emerson and other writings
Letters and other writings by Dorothea Dix (1802-1887), writer, teacher, and reformer who changed the way institutions treated individuals living with mental illness. The materials span the years 1836-1847 and include 32 letters written to fellow educator George Barrell Emerson (1797-1881) regarding her visits to jails and poor houses and the results of her meetings with government officials. Also included are clippings and manuscripts of Dix’s poems and hymns.
